10. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT The best possible anchorage point is straight perpendicular above the person. This reduces the need for free space underneath and minimize pendulum effect. If your anchor point is located at foot level make sure that your fall arrest system is approved for such use. A self-retracting lifeline keeps the rope tight automatically. If you are using a rope, height of fall equals to the length of the loose rope. When you use a rope, always fasten it tightly. Be sure the anchorage point is strong enough. Anchorages to which personal fall arrest equipment is attached shall be capable of supporting at least 1000 kg. The personal fall arrest system should be inspected annually. Only a competent person who is authorized and is familiar with the applicable inspection related requirements and instructions set by the manufacturer can carry out the inspection. Personal protective equipment against falls from a height has a limited service life, which depends on the manufacturer and the nature of the equipment. PPE that have passed their expiry date should not be used. If the safety rigging has been used to prevent a fall, or it has visible defects e.g. from the welding sparks, immediately withdraw it from service. Never repair personal protective equipment against falls by yourself. When you are using a safety harness for the first time, first read the manual and ask for instruction how to use it. 49
