11. FIRE PROTECTION 11. Fire Protection 50 In any production related operation there is always a risk of fire which should never be ignored. Uncontrolled fire is always a significant risk. A fire may cause serious personal injuries and great financial losses. The smoke produced by fires is also dangerous and harmful. Did you know that smoke: contains approx. 250 different toxic compounds causes the majority of fire related fatalities can contribute to panic causes smoke damage to buildings and equipment within several minutes makes it more difficult to evacuate facilities that are on fire. Learn your work site emergency procedures, fire protection rules and hot work rules and instructions. Obey the warning signs and instruction plates. In case of any doubts ask your supervisor how to act. You workplace emergency numbers are listed in the back cover of this safety booklet. Make sure before starting any work that creates a risk of fire that: you have checked the possibility to use alternative methods you know where is the nearest fire extinguisher and how it works you always know two safe escape routes and your muster point you have a flash light that is in working condition you remove all imflamable materials far enough or cover them you know where are the switchers and shutoff valves your worksite is clean and in order heat and sparks do not spread to surrounding areas If you have used a fire extinguisher, report it immediately to fire department personnel or to your supervisor so that the extinguisher can be refilled in order to be used again.
