12. HOISTING Hoisting of objects When lifting long loads make sure that the load doesn’t slip. Don’t start the lift before you are sure the fastening is secure. Keep the following in mind when lifting long bars or beams, either one bar at the time or several in a bundle: Use two lifting wire ropes or chains. Make sure the load is balanced. Bind the lifting strap twice around the load (double loop) in order to get a tightening hold of the load. Use lifting straps that are long enough so that the free length is at least the same as the span between the straps (see picture). When lifting long loads by using single lifting strap make low lifts only. It is recommended to use a guiding rope or rod. Sometimes it is necessary to guide the load by holding it in order to do it accurately. In that case, make sure that the load is under your shoulder height. When lifting short pieces with one lifting strap, use a tightening double loop to prevent the strap from slipping. Use a special cage to lift short pieces. When you have to lift long pipes with no flanges vertically, lift each pipe separately. Use a strap for fastening and tighten it carefully around the pipe. You can prevent the pipe from slipping by welding an additional piece to the pipe or by fastening a bracket to the pipe. 61
