19. SUSTAINABLE MARITIME INDUSTRY 19.1 Material efficiency Material efficiency refers to careful use of natural resources, side-stream management, waste reduction and reuse of materials. The amount of industrial waste can be reduced through increasing efficiency in natural resource use, minimizing adverse environmental impact and cost-effective solutions.
